What is INTECO?
INTECO is the Institute of Technical Standards of Costa Rica; a private, non-profit association, created in 1987. We are recognized, by law # 8279, as the National Standardization Body and we have the declaration of public utility for the interests of the State.
We represent Costa Rica before the international and regional standards organizations ISO, IEC, COPANT.
We are a technical, independent, representative and suitable institution to develop the technical standards required by the country. INTECO understands quality as a fundamental mechanism to ensure transparency, efficiency and improve competitiveness in any process.
From 2018 to 2020, INTECO occupies one of the 20 positions on the ISO * Board of Directors, which represents a benefit for Costa Rica, since the stronger its national standardization body, the greater the opportunities and tools that different stakeholders (consumer, state, companies, society) can take advantage of.

The Association has the following goals:
- Lead the development of Costa Rican standards, ensuring that they are suitable for the socio-economic development of the country and that their preparation is in accordance with the internationally accepted good standardization practices and that they promote the improvement of the quality of the processes, products and services designed, manufactured, processed, used or sold in the country, whether national or imported.
- Promote and develop certification activities articulated with conformity assessment procedures.
- Collaborate with the Public Sector entities in order to achieve greater implementation and use of standardization and certification activities.
- Promote the participation of Costa Rica in international and regional organizations of standardization and certification, performing in them the representation, in the corresponding terms, and assuming the rights and obligations that this representation entails.
- Carry out all those activities that -related to standardization and certification- contribute to improving their knowledge, use and development in society, as well as to favor trade, international cooperation, and allow the generation of positive results that guarantee a sustainable development of the Association.

What is Standardization?
It is the process of formulating and applying rules with the purpose of establishing an order in a specific activity, for the benefit and with the cooperation of all stakeholders and, in particular, to obtain an optimal economy as a whole, respecting the functional requirements and security. It must be based on certain results, obtained by science, technique and experience. It has to set the foundations, not only for the present but also for future development.
Where can I buy an ISO standard?
INTECO is an ISO representative in Costa Rica, since 1994. INTECO has the maximum category of "full member". So any ISO standard can be acquired in our Information Center. What is a technical standard?
Unique solution to a problem that is repeated, achieved through the intervention of all stakeholders, based on science, technique and experience, considering the general interest of the country and the time of its development; It must be approved by an agency with authority for the object. In Costa Rica, that body is INTECO, the only one authorized to develop national technical standards, in accordance with Law No. 8279. The Department of Standardization of INTECO has an annual program of projects for the development of national standards, which are developed by Technical Committees made up of national experts. Your organization can participate in these depending on the specific field of action.
What is a technical specification?
It is a unique solution to a problem that is repeated, achieved through the intervention of all stakeholders, based on science, technique and experience, considering the general interest of the country and the time of its development; It must be approved by an agency with authority for the object.
What is the difference between a technical standard and a technical specification?
The difference is that a technical standard requires the approval of all stakeholders, and a technical specification can be formulated by any of the interested parties. Both are reference documents.
In which scenarios do the normalization processes take place?
The Normalization processes in Costa Rica are developed in three scenarios:
At international level:
- ISO member (1994).
- "Affiliate" member of IEC (2000).
Regional Scope
- Member of COPANT (1987).
National scope based on:
